About ReefScales
Built by reef keepers who got tired of… all of this.
ReefScales started as a passion project sparked by an idea between two brothers: build a better way to sell frags. Because local swaps were fun, but trying to coordinate sales online always turned into the same loop: "Is it still available???"
We thought the marketplace was the problem. It wasn't. The real problem was the knowledge.
The reef knowledge problem
When I first got into reefing, I did what everyone does:
- Read books
- Asked pet stores
- Asked anyone who would listen
And the answers were… all different.
Then I found forums and online communities, and it felt like a force multiplier—suddenly I had hundreds of answers instead of five.
But the more places I found, the more threads I opened. The more threads I opened, the more scrolling I did. The more scrolling I did, the more opinions I found.
Instead of clarity, I got dizzy.
And time makes it worse:
- Great info gets buried
- Knowledge doesn't "update," it just stacks
- The best answer becomes a scavenger hunt across disconnected systems
- Sometimes it feels like the platform is optimized for everything except helping your tank thrive
AI makes generic answers easy. We wanted something deeper.
Now that AI is everywhere, it's easy to get an instant answer to almost anything. But reefing isn't a multiple-choice test. Tanks are different. Advice evolves. Context matters. And the best knowledge usually lives in real reef keeper experience, not in one perfect reply you'll never find again.
ReefScales exists to preserve the thing that gets lost the fastest: hard-earned, community knowledge — organized, revisable, and findable.
ReefScales is a reef
This is the simplest way to describe the vision:
And we want to be very clear:
We are not the authority. The authority is the reefing community—the accumulated wisdom people have earned through years of observation, mistakes, wins, losses, and patience. ReefScales is the structure that helps that wisdom survive, improve, and stay useful.
Meet the knowledge base
Yes, "wiki-style information" exists. Yes, scientific resources exist.
But our knowledge base is built for reef keepers—organized for real-world use, and built to improve over time instead of trapping knowledge in endless threads. It's designed so knowledge can evolve through revisions, not disappear into page 17 of a conversation from 2014.
It's not meant to be "our" knowledge base. It's meant to be edited and improved by the community—because we've all learned a thing or two. Let's keep everyone's tanks thriving.
Not built on 1990s-era threads
A lot of reef knowledge lives in places that work… but look and feel like they were designed when "mobile-friendly" meant "rotate your phone and pray."
ReefScales is built on a modern foundation—fast, structured, and designed to grow. Not as a flex. As a fix.
Because the solution to infinite scrolling isn't "a newer thread." It's a system that can:
- Organize information cleanly
- Preserve it through revisions
- Keep it discoverable over time
- Make it easier for the community to improve it without creating more noise
Thriving tanks are the goal
ReefScales isn't just for troubleshooting emergencies. It's for reef keepers who want to:
- Buy coral and grow it for years
- Keep fish thriving (not stressed, not crowded)
- Build stable systems that get better over time
And when things do thrive? That's what Inspirations is for! Show what's working. Teach by example. Inspire others to keep going. Because nothing motivates like seeing a tank that's genuinely thriving.
Why this matters more now than ever
The world is changing. Reefs are under pressure. Some areas are being restricted or shut down because of overharvesting and environmental damage. We want what's in our tanks to be an extension of the reef—something that thrives.
ReefScales is built to support that:
- Better knowledge
- Better decisions
- Healthier systems
- Longer-lived livestock
- A community that improves together instead of repeating the same mistakes forever
A quick truth: this project was a monster
ReefScales took way longer than we ever expected. Life threw curveballs. We paused and restarted more than once. We rebuilt parts. We questioned everything. We almost talked ourselves out of it.
But through grit, stubbornness, and a lot of long nights… ReefScales is here.
Not perfect. Not finished. But real—and finally alive.
What's live today
Right now you'll find:
- Knowledge Base — The reference layer
- Inspirations — Show what thriving looks like
- Conversations — The beginning of the community layer
This is the foundation we're going to grow from. And yes… remember how this all started? Let's just say those roots haven't been forgotten.
